The Temple

The ocean churns without resistance and spills its radiant treasure!

The waves, priesthood of the sea, kneel on the rocks with deep scars.

And there, they emanate a hollow sound, as if they murmured praise and prayer .

All around the ground is sacred, all Nature worships its temple

And in a divine call the light suddenly tears the horizon, bathing the disciples of the sea in a warm and comforting aura

Soothing all doubt and restlessness

It is fascinating to observe the drama that characterizes the Asturian coast, with an extremely unusual geology that confers some of its beaches a unique personality.

Playa de Vallina belongs to the Protected Landscape of the West Coast, being frequented almost exclusively by fishermen, since it does not meet the ideal conditions for a leisure beach and the area occupied by rocks turns out to be superior to the sand itself.

Like many of the beaches on the Asturian coast, Playa de Vallina shows all its splendor during low tide, when it reveals the treasures that would otherwise be hidden.

Despite the cloudy dark sky, as is the hallmark of the Asturian climate (especially at this time of the year - October), I was lucky for about 10 minutes when some intense light managed to tear the horizon, giving another tone and atmosphere to the whole place.

A few minutes later the stormy weather returned but in fact, I think it is one of those places where the climate only helps creating a different ambience but in any case just as fascinating!

The Fury of Ryujin

This picture was shot in Asturias right before the storm hit and it started pouring non stop .

Was hopeful there would be some colors but the weather there is at least as unpredictable as Scotland, if not more , and just when things were starting to look good a dense layer of fog suddenly settled, along with heavy rain and really dark clouds . I was in the middle of some rocks on the sea by this time and it felt kinda scary 😂

Must have been the rage of Ryujin, the dragon and keeper of the Oceans . Guess he was just having a bad day  😄

Btw, Ryujin is a mithological creature (sea dragon) from the Japanese folklore, in case you were wondering !

Spiritual Refuge

Another rainy and foggy day in Galicia

Have you ever had the oportunity to visit a forest during a foggy day? It's undoubtfuly a different and immersive experience, confering these places another mystique, enveloped in a mysterious and dazzling ambience that transports our senses to a kingdom of magic and makes us imagine what lies ahead the dense mantle of fog that we glimpse through trees and streams.

And so, after spending the night next to this inhospitable place inside my motorhome, as soon as I felt the rain slowing down I grabbed my backpack and started a new exploration, this time quite more calm and relaxed than what had been usual in the previous days .

In fact, it was the most serene and carefree photographic session of the whole trip, without any long and hard walks, without the worry to run against the clock to capture the last moments of sunrise or sunet and, above all, for the possibility of being there for over two hours in deep connection with Nature and without any type of interference, thoughts or external noise that dispersed me from what, albeit seeming so easy, we often end up not doing: Living the small moments and truly being present here and now!

One thing is for sure, magical places like this have beyond any doubt a healing power that transcends what we are capable of explaining in the light of reason and science.

When I decided to return, already revitalized and with a new energy,I felt I needed more moments like this during these (sometimes crazy) photo trips. Usually it is a subgenre of landscape photography that I don't explore much but I most definitely want to do it more frequently, because our mental health comes first and the rhythm and wear often imposed by these trips asks for a little more balance.

This applies ofcourse to other realities from our daily life and no matter what reason, pausing to live the moment and doing an introspection is something that we must not ignore and for which Nature is always a good counselor.

Stop, listen, feel and reflect about what really matters! I say this without any kind of moral superiority, we all fall for the same mistake at times 😉

The moment is now !

Primal Awakening

Finally back in business after a few months without photographing and focusing my energies on some side projects !

Just back from a trip to the amazing Northern Spain  Coast in Asturias / Cantabria and Galicia , feels so good to finally be out there again !  :)

Full image description on next comment

This is the first photo from the series, hope you guys like it !

Aesthetic and Technical approach:

My goal with this image was to put a focus on the central area where we can see the mountain peaks, highlighting the dynamic movement of the water and using a short exposure of 1.5 seconds to freeze it, which in addition to reinforcing the visual guide lines allows to convey  more movement and intensity in a landscape that intends to be dramatic and intense in order to express what I felt in the place.

In terms of compositional techniques, I used the notion of geometric figures with the triangle formed by the central area to the foreground as well as the orientation of guide lines.

I used a quite different framing from the usual on this beach and started on the opposite side to what is photographed by everyone, since I consider this to be one of those privileged places where we can fully explore our creativity and a multitude of compositions without running the risk of repeating what has already been done by everyone else .

Jurassic World

This is one of those places that is hard to believe to exist outside the realms of our imagination !
After a moderately difficult 2h ascend you arrive at this spot and suddenly you feel like you went back in time to the Jurassic period ! Seriously, I had never seen such a raw and primitive landscape!

Because it's not easily accessible there aren't many people visiting it (even though as it becomes less secret the rate of visitors increases exponentially every year), so I basically stayed there for a whole evening by myself, just absorving the unique energy of the place and feeling overwhelmed by it .

Then there's all these huge birds flying in and between the canyon walls, which only adds up to the experience . It's easy to imagine all kinds of prehistorical creatures roaming the place as you contemplate it in awe and for a moment I could visualize Pterodactylus dominating the skies in their Age .

One of the issues of social media and the impact of photography is ofcourse bringing awareness to the existence of such places ... I mean, there's no way you could not share such beauty as a photographer but on the other hand this will inevitably lead to an increase in the flux of tourists, with all the consequences that brings ... For a long time this canyon was a well hidden secret and only a few knew about it! In fact, people who visited it refused to disclosure its location, probably because the primivite state of the landscape and the impact it had on them made it obvious that such places should remain untouched and far away from the interference of mankind .

Nowadays with a bit of googling and some persistence it's easier to find the way there, so one can only hope that those visiting it will at least show some respect and try their best to avoid leaving their mark .

This includes ofcourse, not stepping on the living moss just to get that selfie !

Ideality

10 June 2019.

I look at the map while trying to decide what the next destination will be, always uncertain, always guided by the unpredictability of the Icelandic weather... The day is gray and threatens to surprise the most unwary!

I decide to head to Fjaðrárgljúfur and pursue my vision of this place in my imagination! For some reason that I can't explain, this is one of those places that takes on a new dimension and mystique when enveloped in a gray and gloomy atmosphere, absent from the warm tones of sunlight. That's how I imagined it!

Of all the incredible places in Iceland, this was perhaps one of the ones that made me burst with emotion the most!

Already close to the destination, the last stretch of road shows little human intervention and creates an atmosphere of transition, as if we were going out of the intricacies of civilization towards something more distant and mysterious.

When I arrive I get out of the car with a loaded backpack and start walking! I didn't know yet, but the path of this gorge, which is believed to have been formed in the Ice Age 9000 years ago, required some climbs along its banks.

As I walk the path with some effort, I take a few breaks to get closer to the platforms where it is possible to observe this imposing creation of Nature and appreciate it in all its depth.

I lack adjectives! I have never seen anything like it, there is no description that can do it justice. I feel a mixture of euphoria and tranquility, wonder and fear, bravery and insignificance! It is truly a masterpiece of Nature, carved meticulously along the 2kms of the imposing palagonite walls with its more than 100 meters of depth!

When I reach the opposite end, I realize that the view is in no way due to the more northerly side. I decide to launch the drone and the new perspective leaves me even more incredulous and dazzled! Only now was I able to truly understand the magnificence of this place!

And so, I knew on this day that reality can, sometimes, at least match the scope of our imagination!

Colossal Faith

According to the Icelandic Folklore, Lomagnupur is home for a Giant who protects the South Coast of Iceland from all Evil . Perhaps Lomagnupur itself is that giant turned into this magestic and breathtaking mountain, which stands tall at 700m while watching over its domains .

The red flowers stand alone amid the place, a sign there's still life beyond the dry leaves of and otherwise monochromatic landscape and a symbol of hope during the darkest of times .

The storm will eventually fade away, and now, with my hope reinvigorated and the protection of the mighty giant, I know I no longer need to fear the outcome of this journey ... Story behind the photo :

With 3 consecutive days of yellow alerts marked by extremely strong winds and constant rain, this was the first photo I managed to shoot after being stuck for 5 days in my campervan waiting for the storm to pass .

The conditions were less than ideal (the wind was crazy!) and I only had a few minutes of opening but by the time I took this shot I was already in a state of despair for not being able to shoot anything for so long, so I took the chance and ran straight to this spot which I had scouted a few hours earlier .

Couldn't really find any other interesting compositions and I wanted to make a shot slightly different from the classic shots you see from this place (not that the wind would have allowed me to shoot reflections anyway..), so I took advantage of the Octonal vivid colors of this batch of flowers and tried to frame it along with the dry leaves working as a leading line .
